Serving up good stuff from this galaxy and beyond

Appetizers
For those of you who want to whet your appetite, or maybe just have a
smaller hunger to satisfy, these smaller dishes are just right.
- the lesson of the moth - I first came across
this poem in early 1987. It still strikes me as saying something important
particularly well. And, after all, we can all use a poem to nibble on once
in
a while...
- A photo sampler - favorite pics of this and
that.
I don't know what I would do without my trusty old Minolta. This dish
will vary in size and content as the chef desires.
Salads
Green stuff and stuff that's just good for you, body and soul.
- The whitehouse - you might
want to
take a virtual tour, or you might have something you want to say to the
Pres.
Either way, it's a cool place to visit. Although I actually live in
Washington DC, I have never been to the REAL WhiteHouse, but I have
perused
the online version many a time!
- Food from the jungle. One
of
my best friends from college decided to give up physics grad school (he
was studying quantum relativity at UT Austin) and switch over to
linguistic anthropology. He and his girlfriend started a non-profit
organization and have gone to the headwaters of the Amazon to live with
the indigenous people of the Amazon Basin. Their ultimate goal is to
preserve some of the language and culture of the Kogapakori, who are being
rapidly assimilated by the west. They have a web page, so you can see what
they are doing!
Entrees
The real dishes for people who want to dive in and eat their fill.
Basic
home cookin', and everyone should find something that suits.
- Imagine the Universe! - a
hefty chunk of astronomy for the insatiably curious, written to catch
everyone's interest! This is the site that I write for in my job at NASA's
Goddard Space Flight Center. We have a pretty well-developed public and
educational outreach group, dedicated to bringing the good news of science
to
people everywhere.
- ErgoShop - Furniture you can sit down in
for that seven course meal!.
- A
little bit of hydrodynamics - a project I did for a
class while at the University of Minnesota, where clear nights are often
way way below zero degrees.
- Brain Food -
Kevin
Knuth is one of my best friends from grad school. We shared a passion for
lovely mathematics and we also both loved chocolate desserts. Now he is a
post-doc at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City where
he
uses tensors (see the photo sampler) to try and
separate the superposed electrical signals in the brain and to figure out
what parts of the brain do what. He has a home page that you can look at,
too.
It's about brains and it's good brain food, too!
- something to chew
on from the rainforests, check out this interview with Mark Plotkin,
Ph.D., Executive Director, Ethnobiology and Conservation
Team, and author of Tales of the Shaman's Apprentice.
- Research science
gets a lot of flak these days, which is too bad. I think
that the real problem is that people must not understand, or cannot
understand, what science is TRULY about. Which is unfortunate, since, in my
book, science is about what it is to be human, those qualities of
exploration, discovery and creativity that make for great theories and
great art alike. If you'd like to read a little bit of what the Astronomy
and Astrophysics Survey Committee have to say about the matter, try a
taste of their report on "The Decade of Discovery in
Astronomy and Astrophysics." They say the right things in a nice way
and have some good stuff to back it up...
Desserts
A meal would not really be complete without the icing AND the
cake.
- Wedding cake - Sumptuous and
fun-filled, with lots of promises for a long future; take a look at this
recently added dessert (on the menu since September 12th, 1998!)
- Bad Art - like a
bad
cherry pie, you know it when you experience it. But there's not a museum
for
bad cherry pie as far as I know...
- The
Surrealist Compliment Generator - feel good about yourself, feel
surreal
about yourself. Technology makes it all possible.
Beverages
Quench your thirst with any one of these specialties. Hand picked and
hand
made; you won't find any Hi-C in this list!
- Hot Chocolate - warm and dark and
just
a little sweet. Never that packaged stuff added to water. I aquired a real
love for this while learning about physics and other stuff at Reed College
in
Portland, Oregon.
- Milk - whether it's skim or 2%, this is the
most delicious and nutricious beverage around. Milk. It does a body
good.
- Mission
Statement Generator - because sometimes the bureaucracy can be hard to
swallow.
- [email protected] - if you have
liked
my Milkyway Cafe (or if you didn't like it!), you can email me at
[email protected]. I used to be a pretty good correspondent, but life has
gotten
hectic.
